Blisters on the feet are fluid-filled sacs that form on the outer layer of the skin, typically caused by friction or pressure. They can occur due to wearing ill-fitting footwear, prolonged walking or running, excessive moisture, or repetitive rubbing against the skin. Blisters often manifest as a raised area filled with clear fluid, which may be painful or tender to the touch. In some cases, they can cause discomfort while walking or wearing shoes. While blisters often heal on their own within a few days, they can sometimes lead to complications such as infection if not properly managed. It is important to keep on top of foot blisters should they form. Keep the area clean and protected to prevent infection. If you have a blister that becomes red, swollen or shows signs of pus, or if you develop recurrent or large blisters that cause severe pain, it is suggested that you schedule an appointment with a podiatrist for care to prevent further complications.

Foot Blisters

Foot blisters are often the result of friction. This happens due to the constant rubbing from shoes, which can lead to pain.

What Are Foot Blisters?

A foot blister is a small fluid-filled pocket that forms on the upper-most layer of the skin. Blisters are filled with clear fluid and can lead to blood drainage or pus if the area becomes infected.

Symptoms

(Blister symptoms may vary depending on what is causing them)

  • Bubble of skin filled with fluid
  • Redness
  • Moderate to severe pain
  • Itching

Prevention & Treatment

In order to prevent blisters, you should be sure to wear comfortable shoes with socks that cushion your feet and absorb sweat. Breaking a blister open may increase your chances of developing an infection. However, if your blister breaks, you should wash the area with soap and water immediately and then apply a bandage to the affected area. If your blisters cause severe pain it is important that you call your podiatrist right away.

Foot neuropathy, a common complication of various medical conditions such as diabetes, refers to nerve damage that affects sensation and function in the feet. One of the primary indicators of foot neuropathy is tingling or burning sensations in the feet, often accompanied by numbness or loss of feeling. This diminished sensation increases the risk of injury and can lead to unnoticed wounds or ulcers. Additionally, individuals with foot neuropathy may experience sharp or shooting pains, especially during movement or when pressure is applied to the affected areas. Muscle weakness and difficulty coordinating movements are also common symptoms, making it challenging to walk or perform routine tasks. Recognizing these signs early is essential for timely intervention and management to prevent complications. If you have any of the above symptoms, it is suggested that you are under the care of a podiatrist who can offer you relief and management tips.

Neuropathy

Neuropathy can be a potentially serious condition, especially if it is left undiagnosed. If you have any concerns that you may be experiencing nerve loss in your feet, consult with one of our podiatrists from North Eastern Ohio Podiatry Group LLC. our doctors will assess your condition and provide you with quality foot and ankle treatment for neuropathy.

What Is Neuropathy?

Neuropathy is a condition that leads to damage to the nerves in the body. Peripheral neuropathy, or neuropathy that affects your peripheral nervous system, usually occurs in the feet. Neuropathy can be triggered by a number of different causes. Such causes include diabetes, infections, cancers, disorders, and toxic substances.

Symptoms of Neuropathy Include:

  • Numbness
  • Sensation loss
  • Prickling and tingling sensations
  • Throbbing, freezing, burning pains
  • Muscle weakness

Those with diabetes are at serious risk due to being unable to feel an ulcer on their feet. Diabetics usually also suffer from poor blood circulation. This can lead to the wound not healing, infections occurring, and the limb may have to be amputated.

Treatment

To treat neuropathy in the foot, podiatrists will first diagnose the cause of the neuropathy. Figuring out the underlying cause of the neuropathy will allow the podiatrist to prescribe the best treatment, whether it be caused by diabetes, toxic substance exposure, infection, etc. If the nerve has not died, then it’s possible that sensation may be able to return to the foot.

Pain medication may be issued for pain. Electrical nerve stimulation can be used to stimulate nerves. If the neuropathy is caused from pressure on the nerves, then surgery may be necessary.

Skateboarding poses risks, especially for lower extremity injuries. Fractures, strains, and ankle sprains are common. These injuries can be debilitating, affecting mobility and causing long-term issues. Regardless of age or gender, skateboarders face these risks. Surprisingly, adults over 25 years old are increasingly prone to such injuries. Ankle sprains and fractures are prevalent due to falls or awkward landings. Proper diagnosis and treatment are essential, sometimes requiring surgery for severe cases. To minimize lower extremity injuries, warm up before skating, stretch, and wear protective gear like knee pads and ankle braces. Practicing on safe surfaces and avoiding high-risk areas can also help. Taking precautions and caring for lower extremities is essential for preventing serious skateboarding injuries and enjoying the sport safely. If you have sustained a foot or ankle skateboard injury, it is suggested that you make an appointment with a podiatrist for a proper diagnosis and treatment.
